The State of Massachusetts continues to be in a severe drought and under a Red Flag Warning. These conditions have led to numerous wildfires throughout the Commonwealth. At the recommendation and direction of the State Fire Marshall and the Fire Chiefs Association of Massachusetts, the Town of Acton is requesting residents to prohibit from any open flames, use of fireworks, open recreational and cooking fires, or other sources of ignition. There are numerous brush fires across the state that have been difficult to contain. Serious fires are being started by small things such as a spark from a chain saw, a lawnmower striking a rock, and even mulching leaves. The Acton Fire Department reminds the community that outdoor burning is currently not allowed. We ask residents to follow directives from the State Fire Marshall and refrain from starting outdoor flames, or from any work in which a spark may be created. Even if the Red Flag conditions subside, the entire region is still under an elevated fire risk until we see some substantial precipitation.
