[ARCHIVED] Great Road Complete Streets Study

Great Road Pop Up Flyer

The Town of Acton has received a grant from the State to prepare a Complete Streets plan for Great Road between the Concord town line and Main Street.

Complete Streets are roadways that safely and comfortably serve all users, regardless of age or ability or mode of transportation (walking, bicycling, driving or riding transit).

Filling in existing sidewalk and crosswalk gaps was one recommendation made by through the Rapid Recovery Plan (RRP) for this Corridor. The objective of the RRP was to help businesses recover from the COVID 19 pandemic (explore the rapid recovery plan for Great Road here)

At the same time, residents have requested safe crossings of Great Road in order to access the nearby Bruce Freeman Rail Trail (BFRT).  Currently there are five marked crossings along Great Road (at Concord Road, Brookside Shops, Brook Street, Main Street and Acorn Park Drive). The crossings at the Brookside Shops and Main Street are traffic signal controlled, but the other crossings are not.  With the speed and volume of traffic on Great Road, crossing the street can feel stressful and dangerous for pedestrians and bicyclists. In addition, the crossings are not conveniently spaced or located for many residents, causing pedestrians and bicyclists to cross outside of a crosswalk or go significantly out of the way to use a marked crosswalk.  These issues and others can be addressed by a Complete Streets design for Great Road.

Do you have an idea to improve walking and bicycling on Great Road?  Please tell us your ideas!
