Town Manager John S. Mangiaratti is pleased to share that James Cogan was appointed and sworn as Chief of Police of the Acton Police Department. He was sworn in by Town Clerk Eva Szkaradek on Monday.

Cogan started with the Acton Police Department in 1984 as a Patrol Officer, where he was a first responder to calls for service in the community and exercised crime prevention methods.

In 1988, Cogan was assigned to the position of Youth Officer. He attended D.A.R.E Officer training and began a D.A.R.E. program in the Acton Public Schools. He taught in the schools for several years until he was promoted to Sergeant in 1993.

Chief Cogan was promoted to Lieutenant in 2012 serving as the Special Services Division Commander, and then Deputy Police Chief in 2017. He served as Deputy Chief until he took on the role of Interim Police Chief in December 2022.

Cogan received his Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and Master of Science in Criminal Justice Administration degrees from Western New England College. In 2016, Cogan graduated from the FBI National Academy. He has also attended numerous professional trainings such as Domestic Violence Advocate training.

"My first goal as chief will be to listen," said Chief Cogan. "I want to listen to department members, all those in the Acton community, and members of town staff to identify their concerns and needs. I want to understand our community's expectations, and strengthen relationships with all stakeholders."

"I am pleased to announce the appointment of Chief Cogan," said Town Manager Mangiaratti. "He brings extensive experience, professionalism, knowledge of law enforcement, and an understanding of how to be responsive to our community needs. I am confident in his leadership and I admire his dedication and compassion."
