Cyclical Data Collection

The MA Department of Revenue requires that communities re-inspect each parcel at least once every ten years. To meet the these requirements, the town enlists both internal staff as well as third party contractors to complete these inspections. Town employees will have identification and will typically be driving a town vehicle. Inspectors who are not town employees will also have identification, and their information will be posted here

You are not required to grant access to your property. However, please keep in mind that refusing access may waive your right to a valuation appeal.

Data collection is crucial in confirming the accuracy of assessments across town, and helps to ensure all assessments are no more and no less than fair market value. This process does NOT impact total taxes levied by the town. It verifies that each property is valued accurately – and that property owners are therefore paying only their fair share in real estate taxes.

Reasons a data collector may visit your property on behalf of the Assessing Department:

  • A recent sale of the property
  • A permit or physical change to the property
  • The town has not visited the property recently, and needs to update records in accordance with state guidelines
  • An inspection request or abatement application
